What incorrect Recycling causes in our communities!
Several people are recycling incorrectly and it is leading to several problems. We are putting so many items, resources and money into those big landfills that could be used in a better way through proper recycling and disposal of waste. All those piles of waste, over time, release toxic greenhouse gasses which can contaminate the soil and water and are also the reason for climate change. According to ‘The World Meteorological Organization’, in the next few years we can expect our temperatures to rise up to 1.5°C. We don’t know how well our bodies, animals, and world will adapt to this hot weather. Sometimes, you might find some gooey and dirty liquid under your trash bag. That gooey and dirty liquid is called leachate. After being placed in the landfills, leachate ends up mixing up with water bodies near the landfill. This makes our safe drinking water not so safe and instead toxic. In order to stop this problem, scientists and engineers had created a liner to cover up the leachate and keep it in the area where it was dumped. Animals such as squirrels started making holes in the liner and to prevent that problem, squirrels were killed. Land animals and ocean animals both are getting affected. Our animals are an important part of the food chain. We have relied on animals in the past and now too for several things. Microplastics are also a problem relating to in-correct recycling. The plastic going in the water bodies does not decompose properly, so it breaks into smaller and smaller pieces which eventually become what we call Microplastics. Microplastics are being eaten by fishes and making their way into our bodies which can cause us diseases like cancer. The amount of landfills are increasing, which means more need for land and more leachate, toxins, sick people, pollution, greenhouse gasses and climate change.
