The 3 rules to recycling

The 3 Rules Of Recycling Recycling has a few simple rules to make sure that everything goes right! Whenever recycling make sure you follow these rules.  Recycle  only  what is supposed to be recycled, not anything else! Keep food and liquid  out  of your recycling bin.  No  bagged recyclables. Number 1 means that only the items that are recyclable should be in the bin and if you are in doubt, just leave it out.  Number 2 means that any item that is used as a box or can to store food in, should be clean before being kept in the recycling. Either way,  no  food or liquid should be in the recycling.  Number 3 means that non of the recyclable items should be in bags together. Just put them in the bin.

Coca-Cola makes change!

Several of the canned sodas that we all enjoy drinking at fun parties and special occasions are recyclable. The Coca-Cola Company has took special action to help the USA recycle more. In 2018, Coca Cola set a goal to help America recycle. This goal has 3 parts: 1. Collect and recycle a bottle or can for every ONE bottle or can that was sold till 2030.  2. Coca Cola is working to make all their packaging recyclable by 2025.  3. Currently, they are working to create all their bottles and cans filled with at least 50% recyclable material.  Since then, Coca Cola has continued to do this benefiting work and create partnerships with other organizations which can help them on their mission to help America recycle. The works of all these amazing organizations have allowed America to save 800 million pounds of recyclables from the landfills. After this, other canned/bottled drink companies have ventured into recycling. Today, several companies work to help recycle. America i...

Ways to save Earth

The Earth is changing as we grow, both in good and bad ways. In this post you will learn about the biggest topics that effect America. 1.  Save Water We all can agree that we use water every single day. Whether we use it to have a bath, to wash our hands, or even just drink it, either way we do use water. Imagine everyone using that water. Only 1% of the water in the world is safe for our use. That means that in a few years we will run out of water. Water is a necessity and we can't afford to have that happen. To save water, we all can take a few easy actions. You can take shorter baths, use only as much water as you need, and turn off the tap when you are washing your hands or brushing your teeth. We all can do these little things to save water! 2.  Save Energy As the world is changing, we are using more and more electricity everyday. Electricity is used everyday at work, home and school. We use it to learn, to get work done and even just play games on and hangou...

Recycling your glasses!

Do you wear glasses? If you do, you can recycle them! We know that when we are kids and have glasses, our eye power keeps growing. Why keep them when you probably aren't going to even wear them? The Lion's Club collects eyeglasses. Once they receive them, they sort them and then give them to the low income families who need them.  Send your Eyeglasses to the Lion's Club today! https://www.lionsclubs.org/en

Storm Drain Labels

Recently, local organizations and volunteers have been sticking storm drain labels on these storm drains to create awareness about littering and pollution in the water.  These Storm Drain Labels remind us that all the litter that is pulled into those storm drains with the storms is also being drained into the Chesapeake Bay with the storm water. This litter in the ocean is called polluting oceans.      If you search up 'Storm Drain Labels' on the internet, you will see that there are quite a lot of counties around the area who support Storm Drain Label programs.  How can I help with this situation? * Join a local Storm Drain Label program and help out your county.  * Encourage others not to litter * Tell other people about the dangers

Landfills VS Dump

Until someone made this aware to me, I actually had no idea that there was a difference between landfills and dumps.  Below is a list of facts about Landfills and Dumpsters: Landfills: Landfills are government regulated.  Landfills treat and monitor the waste properly. Only certain types of wastes are allowed.  Landfills hold waste while seeing to environmental concerns.  Landfills are "sanitary".  Landfills are better for our environment.  Dumps: Dumps are illegal places. Dumping is a type of disposal of waste.  Dumps are places where people take their trash.  Dumps are a risk to the environment.  Dumps allow all waste.  "Lazy" people or people with a lack of education are believed to dispose their trash in dumps.  Dumps don't look at environmental concerns.  Hopefully next time you throw your trash in a dump!

Microplastics

Microplastics is a topic that is linked not only to incorrect recycling, but also littering. The "micro" means small (you need a microscope to see it), and plastic (we all know what it is). So, together it is a small piece of plastic. Have you ever went on a long car drive without a trash bin? Have you ever threw a plastic bottle outside the window? If you have, you may not have realized this then, but there is a big problem. It is understandable that you are on a long car drive without a trash bin, but not the throwing part. It is not a big deal or very hard to save the bottle to throw later. It isn't like the car is filled with bottles.      Back to what happens, when these bottles are thrown out, they land on an area of land. There the bottles start decomposing slowly. It takes about 500 years for a single plastic bottle to decompose (that is a lot!). Eventually the bottle decomposes into tiny pieces, about the size of glitter. Then eventually the pieces ...

Compost Bin

Image
Unlike the recycling and trash bin, the compost bin is for food waste. Any food leftovers or fruit peels can go in this bin. The Compost bin allows us to use our food. Not exactly recycle, but use it in a way that allows it to be helpful and beneficial. These food 'scraps' can come handy in gardening and planting. The food scraps and waste contain a large amount of water and beneficial nutrients which can help with preventing/reducing runoff and erosion, establishing a vegetation and healthy soil which can support a plant. Even though many of us are not aware of the compost bin, it is important that we use it as it is beneficial in several ways other than it is another bin to dispose of something in.   Credit: Green Matters Credit: iStock

What should I recycle?

Everyone can agree that it isn't very clear on what should be recycled. Lot's of people find it hard, and you are not alone on that point. It is hard to understand what to recycle. From other blog posts, you may know that recycling one incorrect item can create a big problem. This video below walks you through what should be recycled and what simple acts you can do to encourage sustainability in our communities.

What incorrect Recycling causes in our communities!

Several people are recycling incorrectly and it is leading to several problems. We are putting so many items, resources and money into those big landfills that could be used in a better way through proper recycling and disposal of waste. All those piles of waste, over time, release toxic greenhouse gasses which can contaminate the soil and water and are also the reason for climate change. According to ‘The World Meteorological Organization’, in the next few years we can expect our temperatures to rise up to 1.5°C.  We don’t know how well our bodies, animals, and world will adapt to this hot weather. Sometimes, you might find some gooey and dirty liquid under your trash bag. That gooey and dirty liquid is called leachate. After being placed in the landfills, leachate ends up mixing up with water bodies near the landfill. This makes our safe drinking water not so safe and instead toxic. In order to stop this problem, scientists and engineers had created a liner to...

Plastic Recycling

Image
We all know that one of the items that can be recycled are plastic. But did you know that not all types of plastic can be recycled. The only types of plastic that can be recycled are no. 1 and 2 plastic.      To find out if a certain plastic item is no. 1 or 2 all you have to do is look on the bottom or somewhere on the side of the plastic item. It will have a recycling sign like this ---> ♻️ with a number in the middle. If it is recyclable it will have the number 1 or 2 in the middle.  Example: ♳ ♴     A few examples of recyclable plastic are..... Soda Water bottles Clean milk jugs Clean shampoo and conditioner bottles     The no. 1 type of plastic is Polyethylene terephthalate. The no. 2 type of plastic is high density Polyethylene.  So, the next time you go to your recycling bin to recycle plastic, pay closer attention to what number is on the plastic item.  Credit: General Kinematics

Recycling in your home

Recycling correctly at your home with basic items and ingredients can be hard sometimes. This video below walks you through where basic items at your home should go (in the recycling or trash). It also goes through why you should put a certain item in a certain place.

What is Recycling?

Image
Look around your house or wherever you are, do you see anything old that you could make new. I see several different things everyday around my house that are old, but I could make new ones.  All of that making new out of old is Recycling. Recycling is the making of new materials using the old. For example, after I finished drinking water from my plastic disposable water bottle, I recycled it and now manufacturers and factories  can make another plastic water bottle using mine. You can recycle paper, glass and plastic. Soda cans, plastic milk cartons and newspapers are examples of items made by recyclable material. You might be wondering, how do all those items get recycled? Soda cans and plastic bottles are shredded or broken down and melted. Then people shape them into soda cans and plastic bottles again! . By recycling , we are reducing the amount of waste that is being sent to landfills, conserving natural resources, preventing/ reducing pollution and conserving ...
